Staying at Rifugio Calvi

Where the Piave is born: a friendly CAI hut on a rocky balcony under Monte Peralba, in the quietest corner of these mountains.

Rifugio Calvi belongs to the other Dolomites: the north-eastern frontier above Sappada, where German-rooted dialects survive and the crowds don’t reach. The hut stands on a rock terrace at the head of Val Sesis, directly beneath the pale pyramid of Monte Peralba, a short stroll from the springs of the Piave, the river Italians call sacred to the homeland. It starts here as a gush of clear water out of the mountainside.

Staying the night

A classic club hut of the Sappada CAI section: about 50 sleeping places in simple rooms and dorms, a winter room always open for emergencies, warm and well kept. Guests consistently describe it with the same words: clean, welcoming, kind managers. Simple comforts, honest prices, no theatre.

The food

Mountain kitchen shaped by the borderlands: polenta, cheeses, hearty plates after a day on the ridges. Reviews run warm with the odd grumble about price versus plate; nobody disputes the welcome.

Booking reality

The easiest booking on this entire list. Fifty beds and a low profile mean that outside mid-August you can often decide days ahead. This is the hut for spontaneous plans.

Getting there

Drive (or walk) the little Val Sesis road above Cima Sappada to the last car park, then it’s ~30 minutes on trail 132, one of the shortest hut approaches anywhere, which makes it a superb first-ever rifugio night or a family trip. Longer, wilder lines come over from the Carnic ridge.

Good to know

• Monte Peralba’s normal route is a straightforward half-day from the hut; the Sartor via ferrata on the same peak needs a kit and experience.
• Visit the Piave springs at dawn: pilgrimage plaque, mountain silence.
• You’re on the Carnic border: WWI ridge-line trenches are a day-walk away.
• Open June to September.
