Staying at Rifugio Frara

The pass-top compromise on Gardena: hotel comfort at 2,150 m, AV2 on the doorstep, and almost no pretence of wilderness.

Frara sits right on Passo Gardena, where the Sella's stone bulk meets the Cir towers and the road between Val Gardena and Alta Badia tops out. That makes it a strange, useful kind of mountain night: less remote rifugio theatre, more high-pass base camp with the best part of the day still intact once the traffic thins. If you want dawn light on the Cir, or an easy launch onto the Sella loop, sleeping here makes more sense than commuting up from the valleys.

Staying the night

Think mountain hotel rather than austerity hut. Rooms have private bathrooms with showers, TV-Sat, and mostly balconies; there is also a sauna, which at this altitude feels more practical than indulgent after a wet day on the pass. The trade-off is obvious and worth stating: you are sleeping beside one of the Dolomites' busiest roads, not escaping from it.

The food

The large dining room leans into the view and the crossover menu you would expect on this border pass: Italian dishes with South Tyrolean mountain standards in the background. It reads as a reliable end-of-stage dinner room, not a culinary destination.

Booking reality

Direct online booking keeps it much easier than the celebrity huts. Peak summer weekends and the bike-holiday windows around the four passes still tighten up, but this is not one of the Dolomites beds that triggers booking wars months out.

Getting there

You can literally arrive by bus, car, bike or on foot at the pass. For walkers, the key point is context: Alta Via 2 crosses Passo Gardena, and the Cir and Pisciadu side of the Sella opens straight from the door. In winter it flips cleanly into Sellaronda ski terrain; in summer it is a strategic overnight between Selva and Corvara.

Good to know

  • If you want the pass at its best, stay overnight and walk out early: sunrise and the hour after dinner are the whole point.
  • This is a comfort stop, not a wild one; if road noise and lift infrastructure kill the mood for you, choose deeper terrain.
  • It is one of the easiest high starting points in the Sella for a weather-window day: you wake up already on the pass.
