Staying at Rifugio Fuciade

A Michelin-listed dining room in a hay meadow: the Dolomites’ most famous “walk to dinner”.

Fuciade isn’t really a trekkers’ hut; it’s a destination. It sits in a wide, almost absurdly picturesque pasture basin above Passo San Pellegrino, ringed by the Costabella ridge and looking out at the Pale di San Martino. People book months ahead not for a bed on a route but for the kitchen: the place carries a Michelin Guide listing, bakes its own bread and pastries daily, and in winter collects its dinner guests from the pass by snowcat.

Staying the night

A handful of warm, wood-clad rooms and named suites (one has its own sauna); after a recent renovation the restaurant and two rooms are fully wheelchair accessible, a rarity at this altitude. Breakfast is a homemade buffet from the in-house patisserie. This is the softest bed on this list; book it as the indulgence night of a trek, or as a base for day walks.

The food

Ladin tradition cooked at gourmet level: cajonciej (the local filled pasta), polenta gnocchi, reinterpreted mountain classics and a dessert list from a proper pastry workshop. Reviewers repeatedly say the same thing: “a starred restaurant in the middle of the mountains”. Prices to match; guests almost universally call them justified.

Booking reality

The restaurant fills before the rooms do; reserve dinner when you reserve the bed, and think weeks-to-months ahead for summer weekends and the winter season.

Getting there

An easy 45-minute walk on a track from Passo San Pellegrino (summer guests can request a car permit; in winter the hut sends a snowcat or snowmobile). For hut-to-hut walkers it links naturally with the traverses towards the Marmolada side.

Good to know

  • Open June to early October, then a winter season, making it one of the few near-year-round addresses here.
  • The basin’s scattered old hay barns at sunset, with the Pale glowing behind, are the photo everyone leaves with.
  • It hosts “Sounds of the Dolomites” festival concerts; dinner plus a concert is a five-star mountain day.
