Staying at Rifugio Locatelli
The front-row seat for the Tre Cime north faces: 10,000 booking requests a year, cash only, and worth every hoop.
Every famous photo of the Tre Cime’s north walls, the three great shadowed faces rising out of scree, is taken from around Rifugio Locatelli (Dreizinnenhütte). The hut stares straight at them across a shallow valley dotted with alpine lakes. Day hikers get twenty minutes here mid-loop; overnight guests get the faces at sunset, at sunrise, and by starlight, which is a different sport entirely.
Staying the night
Around 140 sleeping places, split between a modest number of proper beds in small rooms and a big mattress dorm; the attic bunks are tight, storage is minimal, and nobody pretends otherwise. This is a classic high-mountain hut: you’re paying for the window, not the wardrobe. Half board is mandatory on Saturdays. Cash or bank cheque only: there’s no phone line up here for a card terminal.
The food
South Tyrolean hut kitchen (canederli, goulash, strudel) served efficiently to a full house. Consistently rated good, honest, plentiful; the terrace at lunch is one of the busiest in the Dolomites, dinner is calmer.
Booking reality
The most bureaucratically serious booking on this list, and fair enough: the hut fields roughly 10,000 requests a year. Online booking only (emails are not processed), the calendar opens mid-to-late February, replies can take two to three weeks, and you must state a first and second accommodation choice. The deposit is non-refundable. If you get a “yes”, treat it like a concert ticket.
Getting there
No lift, no road for visitors: everyone walks, which is part of the magic. Classic approaches: from Rifugio Auronzo around the Tre Cime loop (~1.5–2 h), or up the wilder Val Fiscalina from Sesto (~3 h, the historic Innerkofler route). Buses run from Dobbiaco and Misurina in season.
Good to know
- Sunset does NOT hit the north faces directly; the drama is dawn, when first light rakes across them. Set an alarm.
- The two small lakes (Laghi dei Piani) 15 minutes away are the classic photo foreground.
- Camping is banned throughout the nature park; the hut is the only legal way to be here at golden hour without a night march.
- Open end of June to end of September only.
