Staying at Rifugio Micheluzzi
Val Duron’s dinner table: a family-run hut with hotel-grade rooms, a chef worth the walk, and a snowmobile pickup in winter.
Micheluzzi is the custodian of Val Duron, the green pastoral valley that curls behind Campitello di Fassa under the Sassopiatto’s south flank. It’s the least “alpine” hut on this list (no scree, no summit; meadows and larch instead), and that’s its charm: this is where hut-to-hut walkers land after the stony Catinaccio crossings and remember that valleys have kitchens.
Staying the night
The rooms break the rifugio mould entirely: doubles, triples and family lofts, all recently renovated in spruce, all with private bathrooms, some with balconies over the valley, plus hairdryers and TVs, which no one expects at a trailhead two hours from the road. Walls are on the thin side (it’s still a wooden mountain house), but guests routinely describe the standard as hotel level.
The food
The reason many people come at all: Ladin and Trentino classics from local ingredients. Barley soup, polenta with goulash and mushrooms, a serious cheese board, and a Kaiserschmarrn with a fan club of its own. There’s a curated wine cellar. Book a table even as a house guest in peak season.
Booking reality
Comfortable capacity and a lower “trophy factor” than the high huts, so beds are gettable weeks rather than months out, though the best rooms (the two superior doubles with balconies) go first.
Getting there
Walk or bike up Val Duron from Campitello (~1.5–2 h on the valley track; a shuttle runs in summer), or come over the top: from Col Rodella’s cable car via the Friedrich August path, or down from the Antermoia/Passo Duron side. In winter the hut fetches guests by snowmobile from Campitello, which turns dinner into an expedition.
Good to know
- Perfect “soft landing” night between the Catinaccio and the Sella/Sassolungo legs of a west-Dolomites itinerary.
- One of the few huts on this list with a real winter season (December–April).
- Sunset lights the Sassolungo group straight up the valley.
