Staying at Rifugio Padova

A family clearing in the forest under the Spalti di Toro: wooden cabins, a professional chef, and spires nobody has heard of.

Rifugio Padova sits low, in a broad clearing just under 1,300 m in Val Talagona, ringed by fir and beech forest with the jagged Spalti di Toro and Monfalconi towers crowding the skyline. This is the Dolomites’ quiet southeast, the “Oltrepiave”: no lifts, no coach parks, and a hut that has been the De Lorenzo family’s life for 25 years. It’s the kind of place Italians drive to for Sunday lunch and foreigners discover by accident and then gatekeep.

Staying the night

A small dorm of bunk beds (around 14 places, duvets provided) plus the special bit: wooden cabins at the forest edge for couples and families who want their own door. Bathrooms are kept immaculate; there’s WiFi, e-bike charging, even a little lecture room. It feels more base-camp-farmstead than alpine perch, and children love it.

The food

Paolo is a professional chef, and it shows: Cadore classics (casunziei, game, polenta) done properly, at valley prices. Among people who know the area, “eating at Padova” is a stated reason to plan the walk.

Booking reality

Rarely a battle. The dorm and cabins want a call ahead in August; otherwise this is the flexible anchor of any Oltrepiave plan.

Getting there

A small road climbs Val Talagona from Domegge di Cadore to (or near) the hut (check current driving and parking rules locally), or walk in through the forest. Hut-to-hut connections go over the wild Forcella Montanaia towards Val Cimoliana, one of the great lonely crossings of the range, past the tooth of Campanile di Val Montanaia.

Good to know

  • The family maintains a sculpture-dotted nature trail around the clearing, the “Narli” woodfolk, genuinely charming with kids.
  • The Anello degli Spalti (Spalti di Toro ring) is the local test piece: long, exposed in places, unforgettable.
  • Being low, it opens earlier and closes later than the high huts; a good June/October option.
