Staying at Rifugio Passo Fedaia
The one hut on Alta Via 2 you can also reach by car: a pass-top terrace staring straight at the Marmolada glacier.
Passo Fedaia is where the paved road and the high mountains meet: a dammed lake, a car park, and across the water the sheer north wall of the Marmolada with its retreating glacier. Rifugio Fedaia has stood at the pass since 1967, run by the Da Pian family, and it serves two audiences at once: day-trippers who drove up for the view, and Alta Via 2 trekkers using it as a comfortable overnight before or after the Marmolada massif. For anyone who has just spent days on rockier ground, it is the softest possible landing.
Staying the night
Rooms rather than a dormitory hall: doubles, four-bed rooms and larger shared rooms, all with heating, private bathrooms and parquet floors, a proper step up in comfort from a typical Alta Via bunkroom. The honest trade-off is the view out the window: a car park and the dam road, not wilderness, though the Marmolada wall behind it makes up for a great deal.
The food
A full restaurant kitchen built for the day-trip crowd as much as for guests staying the night: a sweet and savoury buffet breakfast, and a la carte options beyond the usual half-board plate. Reviewers rate the food and the private-bathroom comfort well above a typical Dolomites rifugio, at a price that reflects it.
Booking reality
Book online directly through the hut’s own system; summer weekends fill a few weeks out on the strength of Marmolada day-trippers and Alta Via 2 traffic, and midweek is far easier. The hut also runs into the ski season, when the pass becomes part of the Sellaronda circuit.
Getting there
By car, the pass sits on the paved road between Canazei and Rocca Pietore, with parking at the dam. On foot, Alta Via 2 crosses the pass between the Sella group and the Marmolada; Rifugio Castiglioni alla Marmolada, the trekkers’ usual waypoint here, is barely 15 minutes across the road, and the two make an easy either-or choice for the night.
Good to know
- The dam wall and lake give the best easy-access view of the Marmolada’s glacier and north face in the range, no climbing required.
- Because it is drivable, this is also a solid base for tackling the Marmolada via ferratas or the glacier route without carrying a full trekking pack.
- Expect road noise and day-trip crowds on the terrace around midday; evenings and mornings are calmer.
