Where to stay in Val Gardena to ski the Sellaronda
Three villages share one valley, and only one of them is on the circuit. Pick the wrong one, or the right one at the wrong end of the street, and every ski day starts with a bus. We measured the walk from 440 places to stay to the nearest main lift, so you can see it before you book.
The short answer
Selva
On the Sellaronda
Two gondolas leave from the village and both put you on the circuit. If skiing is the point of the trip, stay here.
Clockwise (orange signs) you leave by the Costabella chairlift and the Dantercepies gondola for Passo Gardena and Alta Badia. Anticlockwise (green signs) the Ciampinoi gondola takes you over to Plan de Gralba and Passo Sella. The local tourist board names Selva as the starting village for the circuit.
Mileage, the Sellaronda in either direction, the widest choice of places to stay near a lift.
A resort strung along one main road, not an old town with a pedestrian centre like Ortisei.
The Saslong gondola and the Sochers chairlift above it reach Ciampinoi, the ridge over Selva where the circuit is a run away. The Col Raiser gondola goes the other way, to Seceda. An underground funicular joins the two sides.
Saslong gondola, Col Raiser gondola, and the Gardena Ronda Express funicular between them. The Saslong station is a few hundred metres east of the village centre; Col Raiser is further out, up the valley side.
Both sides of the valley from one base, the World Cup Saslong slope on the doorstep, a quieter evening.
Half of the places to stay we measured here are more than 800 m from a main lift, the highest share of the three villages. Check the map before you book.
The main town of the valley, with two mountains of its own: Seceda and Alpe di Siusi. The Sellaronda is five lift rides away, not one.
To reach the circuit on skis the official route is Seceda, Col Raiser, Gardena Ronda Express, Saslong, Ciampinoi, Selva. In town, the La Curta covered escalators (295 m) link the centre with the Seceda valley station.
A town with a pedestrian centre, Alpe di Siusi by gondola from the middle of it, and La Longia: over 10 km from Seceda down to Ortisei, 1 273 m of vertical.
If the Sellaronda is why you are coming, count the lifts in that chain, twice a day, or plan on the ski bus to Selva.
They go into every price link on this page, so you land on real availability instead of an empty search.
Every place to stay, by its walk to a lift
Dark green is within 200 m of a main lift. The faint dark dots are over 800 m: fine with a car or the ski bus, a long way in ski boots.
up to 200 m200 to 400 m400 to 800 mover 800 m, ski busWalk to the nearest main lift. Dark lines are lifts, pale bands are pistes. Tap a dot.
Nine addresses, picked by distance
One rule: close to a main lift, across hotels, B&Bs and apartments. We have not stayed in them. What each one offers is quoted from the property or its tourist-board listing, with the link.
Next to the gondola that heads for Passo Gardena and Alta Badia, the clockwise (orange) start of the Sellaronda. The piste back into Selva ends about 35 m from the building.
4 star · breakfast or half board · rooftop pool and sauna · ski room
The hotel describes itself as directly next to the cable car, with about 15 m from the slope to its ski room.
At the top end of the village: the centre and the Ciampinoi gondola are a walk back down the main street.
About 50 m from the Ciampinoi valley station, the anticlockwise (green) start towards Plan de Gralba and Passo Sella. Ciampinoi is also where the Saslong side and the runs back to Selva meet.
4 star · wellness area
The address is Streda Mëisules, the main road through Selva: expect traffic outside, not a quiet lane.
Beside the Costabella chairlift in the middle of the village, which links across to Dantercepies; Ciampinoi is a short walk the other way. Either direction of the circuit without a bus.
4 star · half board · sauna and Turkish bath · ski room
The hotel says both directions of the Sellaronda can be reached on foot, by the Costabella chairlift or the Ciampinoi gondola.
Costabella is a chairlift, not a gondola: the first ride of the day is an open one.
Rooms, suites with kitchens and apartments about 150 m from the Dantercepies gondola, with a piste some 20 m from the house. Self-catering this close to a lift is rare: four in five of the apartments we measured in the valley are more than 400 m from a main lift.
bed and breakfast, or self-catering apartments for 2 to 5 · sauna, whirlpool, steam bath · ski boot dryer, garage
Its listing says directly on the training slopes, with a connection to the Sellaronda.
No restaurant in the house, and it stands at the upper end of Selva, away from the centre.
At the Col Raiser valley station, which is also where the Gardena Ronda Express funicular leaves for the Saslong side. One base, both halves of the valley.
3 star superior · half board · 160 m² wellness area with sauna and hot tubs · ski room with boot heater
The listing says 50 m from the Col Raiser gondola and 50 m from the funicular. We measure about 100 m in a straight line and 150 m on foot; either way it is a walk in ski boots, not a bus.
Between the villages rather than in one: the centre of S. Cristina or Selva is a walk or a bus for the evening.
On Streda Setil, the street of the Alpe di Siusi gondola, about 250 m from the valley station and in the centre of town. The right kind of address if the plan is Alpe di Siusi and Seceda rather than the circuit.
breakfast included, half board available · sauna, steam bath, whirlpool · ski boot dryer, ski pass service
Its listing says the Seceda and Alpe di Siusi lift stations are within easy walking distance.
For the Sellaronda you start every day with the chain of lifts described above.
44 km around the Sella massif: 23 km on skis, 21 km on lifts. Orange signs clockwise, green anticlockwise. The same site's day-trip page counts 26 km of slopes and about 5 hours. valgardena.it, Sellaronda

Which village in Val Gardena is best for the Sellaronda?
Selva. Its two gondolas, Ciampinoi and Dantercepies, start the circuit in either direction from the village. From S. Cristina it is two lifts to Ciampinoi, the Saslong gondola and the Sochers chairlift; from Ortisei it takes five, through Seceda and Col Raiser.
Is Ortisei a bad choice for skiing?
No, it is a different trip. Ortisei has Seceda and Alpe di Siusi on its doorstep and the longest run in South Tyrol, La Longia, back into town. It is the wrong base only if the Sellaronda is the reason you are coming.
How were the distances measured?
Places to stay and lifts come from OpenStreetMap. We route the walk from each building to the valley station of the nearest main lift on our own routing server, the same one behind the hut-to-hut planner, and round the result. For buildings within 100 m of a lift in a straight line we say under 100 m and leave it there, because routing sends that walk around the block and overstates it. Treat every number as about right, not surveyed.
Have you stayed in these hotels?
No. They are on the page because of where they stand, and that is the only thing we vouch for. Rooms, food and service are for the reviews on the booking page.
How we picked: by distance to a lift, measured on the map. We have not stayed in these places. Price links on this page are affiliate links: if you book through one we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Mountain hut bookings on this site are never commissioned: those stay directly between you and the hut.
