The emerald lake with the wooden boathouse is the most photographed place in the Dolomites, and in July and August it behaves like it. The good news: the crowds are a midday phenomenon. Arrive before 8:00 or after 17:00 and the lake is close to the postcard.
Braies is also a doorway, not only a destination: Alta Via 1 starts here, and a steep afternoon climb puts you in the quiet Fanes-Sennes-Braies plateau huts, which is exactly how you get the sunrise shot without a 4:00 alarm in a hotel far away.
In peak season (roughly July 1 to September 15) the road into the Prags valley is closed to unbooked private cars between 9:00 and 16:00. If you want to drive in that window, you must reserve parking online in advance on the official Prags portal; the lots by the lake charge in tiers (rough guide: a few hours around 7-15 EUR).
The stress-free alternative is bus 442 from Dobbiaco/Toblach station, which drops you at the lake. Trains on the Pusteria line connect Dobbiaco to Fortezza and the main Verona-Brennero line.
The loop around the lake is about 3.5 km and takes an easy hour: flat and stroller-friendly on the west shore, narrower with rock-cut steps on the east side. Go clockwise for the gentler start. The boathouse dock, the classic photo, is right by the parking area, which is why it is mobbed by mid-morning.
This is the trick almost nobody uses. From the lake, trail 1 climbs steeply to the Sennes plateau: Rifugio Biella sits about 3 hours up (it is the first Alta Via 1 hut), with Sennes and Fodara Vedla an easy walk beyond. Sleep up there, walk down early, and you reach the boathouse before the first buses while the water is still glass.

In summer (early July to mid September), yes, if you arrive between 9:00 and 16:00: the valley road is closed to unbooked cars in that window. Book on the official Prags parking portal, or take bus 442 from Dobbiaco, or simply arrive before 9:00.
About 3.5 km, allow 1 to 1.5 hours. The west shore is flat and wide; the east shore has narrow sections and rock steps. It is an easy walk, not a hike.
Sunrise. The lake is calm, the boathouse is empty and the peaks catch first light. Sleeping in a hut on the Sennes plateau above the lake (Biella, Sennes, Fodara Vedla) lets you walk down to the shore before the crowds arrive.
Swimming is not allowed; the lake sits in a protected nature park. Wooden rowboats can be rented at the boathouse in season, which is the classic photo everyone comes for.
