Best light

Sunrise and last light

The Seceda ridgeline is the Dolomites' most surreal skyline: a green meadow that simply tears off into space, with the Odle needles leaning behind it like a sinking ship. At 2,500 m, it is also one of the easiest big views to reach: a two-stage lift from Ortisei does all the work.

The trick is time of day. The lift runs office hours, the light does not. The photographs that made Seceda famous are dawn and dusk frames, which belong to people who slept on the mountain.

Up by lift, down on foot

The Ortisei-Furnes-Seceda cable car takes about 15 minutes; from the top station the ridgeline viewpoint is a 10-15 minute walk. Return tickets are not cheap (budget 40-50 EUR in high season, check current prices), so consider riding up and walking down.

The classic descent drops past the Pieralongia pinnacles and the alpine huts of the Cisles basin down to Col Raiser or all the way to Ortisei: 2 to 4 hours of easy trails through the best meadow scenery in Val Gardena.

  • Lift from Ortisei, ~15 min, seasonal hours (roughly 8:30-17:30)
  • Ridge viewpoint: 10-15 min from the top station
  • Walk-down via Pieralongia to Col Raiser: ~2 h, easy

Sunrise belongs to the huts

The lift opens around 8:30, hours after the good light. Photographers either climb 2 hours in the dark or, smarter, sleep at Rifugio Firenze in the Cisles basin below the ridge, 45-60 minutes from the viewpoint. Wake at 5:00, walk up with a headlamp, have the ridge alone, and be back for the hut's breakfast.

Seceda also links into real hut-to-hut terrain: over the Forces de Sieles pass into the Puez plateau, connecting to Rifugio Puez and the Alta Via 2 corridor.

FAQ

How do you get to Seceda?

Cable car from Ortisei in Val Gardena (two stages via Furnes), about 15 minutes, then a 10-15 minute walk to the ridgeline. In season the lift runs roughly 8:30 to 17:30. On foot it is a 2-hour, 1,100 m climb.

Can you see Seceda at sunrise?

Not by lift: it opens hours after dawn. Sleep at Rifugio Firenze in the Cisles basin (45-60 min below the ridge) and walk up with a headlamp, or climb from the valley in the dark. The empty ridge at first light is worth either.

Is Seceda a hike or a viewpoint?

Both. The ridge itself is an easy stroll from the lift. The good hiking starts when you walk down: past the Pieralongia rocks to Col Raiser (about 2 hours) or into the Puez group for a proper multi-day route.
