Staying at Rifugio Fredarola

A basic saddle rifugio turned boutique sauna suite: Fredarola swapped bunks for glass-walled luxury, and the Marmolada view got a price tag to match.

Fredarola sits on the Belvedere saddle above Passo Pordoi, exactly where its name promises a view: floor-to-ceiling glass onto the Marmolada glacier that gave the spot its nickname. For decades it was a plain hikers’ baita on the Viel dal Pan path; a 2023 renovation under the Conturina hotel group turned it into a small luxury lodge, Comfort rooms up to a Junior Suite with a private sauna, all glass and wood at 2,370 m. The bones are still a mountain refuge on a hiking trail; the finish is a boutique hotel.

Staying the night

A handful of Comfort rooms and Junior Suites, some with a private sauna, replaced the old shared rooms after the 2023 refit. An indoor pool, an outdoor infinity pool and a Finnish sauna, all facing the glacier, are unusual amenities this high in the Dolomites and unmatched by any other hut in this book. The honest trade-off: this is small-hotel pricing now, not a trekker’s rifugio budget, and a night here costs several times a standard hut bed.

The food

The kitchen leans into the day-trip Sellaronda crowd at lunch: grilled meat, wood-fired pizza, and reviewers note prices that climb toward oysters and champagne at the high end. It is well regarded and well reviewed, just not the humble hut food of its neighbours.

Booking reality

Book online through the hut’s own system; with only a few boutique rooms, summer weekends and the ski season book out well ahead, doubly so given the hut’s popularity as an add-on package from the Conturina group’s hotel in Canazei. There is no walk-in dormitory fallback if the rooms are full.

Getting there

Roughly 1 h on the easy, near-level Viel dal Pan trail (601) from Passo Pordoi, the gentlest approach to any hut in this book, on the route of Alta Via 2; Rifugio Viel dal Pan itself is about 40 minutes further along the same path. Open roughly June 20–September 20 in summer, plus a winter season tied to the Sellaronda ski circuit.

Good to know

• The floor-to-ceiling glacier view from the pool and dining room is the reason for the Belvedere nickname; go for sunset if you can.
• This is the only hut in the book with a private in-room sauna, a genuine rarity at 2,370 m.
• Budget trekkers on Alta Via 2 should treat Fredarola as a lunch stop rather than a bed for the night, and look to plainer neighbours instead.
