Staying at Rifugio Viel dal Pan

Twenty-three beds on the old bread-traders’ path, with the Marmolada glacier filling every window.

The Viel dal Pan (“path of bread”) is the balcony trail along the Padon ridge that flour traders from Belluno once walked; a Bamberg doctor named Karl Bindel restored it in the late 1800s, which is why German maps call it the Bindelweg. The little refuge at its midpoint has the single most direct view of the Marmolada’s north face and glacier anywhere in the Dolomites, with the Fedaia lake glinting below. Thousands walk past on a fine day. Almost nobody sleeps here, which is exactly the opportunity.

Staying the night

Just 23 beds in simple rooms: this is a small family house, not a trekking factory. Evenings belong to the glacier across the valley, which turns pink at sunset while the day crowd is already back at their hotels. Simple facilities, warm hospitality; think of it as a front-row seat with blankets.

The food

One of the great lunch stops of the central Dolomites, and it knows it: generous Fassa-style plates (polenta, cheeses, canederli) served to a full terrace all season. Dinner for house guests is quieter and cooked with the same hand.

Booking reality

Small capacity is the whole constraint: weekends and the August window go early, purely because 23 beds is nothing against the Bindelweg’s foot traffic. Phone or email directly; the hut is not on the big booking portals. Open late June to late September, plus a winter life serving the Arabba ski slopes.

Getting there

From Passo Pordoi it is ~1 h of nearly level walking on trail 601 via the Fredarola saddle, one of the easiest approaches to any hut in this book. From the Fedaia dam it is a steeper ~1.5 h climb. Alta Via 2 runs along the ridge on its way from Pordoi towards the Marmolada.

Good to know

  • Sunset and dawn on the Marmolada glacier are the payoff; bring the good camera.
  • The Sasso Cappello knoll behind the hut adds a 20-minute detour with a 360° view over both the Marmolada and the Sella.
  • The full Pordoi–Fedaia traverse makes a superb easy day even if you don’t stay: mostly level, endlessly photogenic.
