Staying at Rifugio Aquileia

The Staulanza-side doorstep to Pelmo: a low-friction mountain inn that exists to set up the real walking above it.

Aquileia sits near Passo Staulanza under the north-west side of Monte Pelmo, at the point where a roadside stop turns into one of the classic gentle entries onto Alta Via 1. It is not the hut you cross the Dolomites to collect as a trophy night. It is the hut you choose because you want a calm launch towards Rifugio Città di Fiume, Pelmo above you, and none of the logistics drama that comes with the higher names.

Staying the night

The location at 1,583 m shapes the whole experience. This is a lower, easier overnight than the exposed balcony huts: more staging post than summit theatre, more practical sleep before a walk than romantic hardship. That is its strength if you are arriving late, travelling with mixed abilities, or simply want to break the Staulanza side of the route into sane pieces.

The food

The house reads more like a straightforward mountain inn than a destination kitchen. On a trip like this, that is often enough: a plate, a bed, and Pelmo waiting for the morning.

Booking reality

Because its web presence is thin, treat it as an old-school direct-confirmation stop and sort the bed ahead of time rather than assuming you can improvise. It is the sensible move before summer weekends on the Staulanza road and during the AV1 season.

Getting there

The easy walk to Rifugio Città di Fiume, about an hour and a half on the trail, is the key fact: sleep low here, then step onto the Pelmo side fresh in the morning. Road access from Passo Staulanza makes arrival simple, while the walking above quickly becomes proper Dolomites country.

Good to know

  • Use it if you want an AV1 start that does not begin with a rushed drive and a full stage on the same day.
  • Pelmo dominates the whole area, but the immediate terrain around the hut is gentler than the mountain's reputation suggests.
  • Its value is logistical clarity: easy arrival, easy departure, and the good walking saved for when you are rested.
