Staying at Rifugio Città di Fiume

The little green hut under the Pelmo’s north face: twenty beds, one long table spirit, and the most sociable night on Alta Via 1.

Città di Fiume occupies an old dairy pasture on the flank of Monte Pelmo, the huge lone throne of rock the Ladins call the Caregon: God’s armchair. Alta Via 1 walks straight past the door, which makes this small CAI hut one of the route’s classic overnights: four rooms, twenty beds, forty dinner seats, and the Pelmo’s north wall going bronze over the meadow at sunset.

Staying the night

Small and honest: single beds and bunks with duvets and pillows across four shared rooms; no private doubles, and a sleeping bag liner is mandatory (bring one, they check). The shower is coin-operated and the plumbing has its moods. Reviews split along expectation lines: trekkers who wanted a sociable mountain night love it; guests expecting hotel comforts don’t.

The food

Mountain-traditional, locally sourced where possible; the soups and pasta get good words from AV1 walkers, and breakfast is the standard continental hut spread (carb up at dinner). The terrace beer after the Croda da Lago stage has an outsized reputation.

Booking reality

Twenty beds on the most walked Alta Via in the world: July–August dates go early, and AV1 through-hikers should book it the same week as Lagazuoi and Coldai. Shoulder weeks are relaxed.

Getting there

Gentlest approach in the region: ~1.5 h on trail 472 from Passo Staulanza. On AV1 it’s the landing after the long Croda da Lago stage from the Nuvolau side. The Val Fiorentina villages below make it an easy first night for a southbound section hike.

Good to know

  • The circumnavigation of the Pelmo (a long, magnificent day) starts and ends at this door.
  • The name (“City of Fiume”) is a piece of 20th-century Adriatic history carried up into the mountains by its founding CAI section.
  • Opens mid-June; closes with the season in late September.
