Best light

Sunrise mirror; late-October larch gold

Lago Federa is the quiet cousin of the famous lakes: no road, no lift, a small tarn ringed by larches under the wall of Croda da Lago, with Rifugio Croda da Lago (Palmieri) standing directly on the shore. In late October, when the larches turn, it is arguably the single best autumn photograph in the Dolomites.

Because every visitor walks in, the lake keeps its calm even in August, and sleeping at the hut puts you ten steps from the sunrise reflection.

Walking in

The scenic approach leaves from Passo Giau: 2 to 2.5 hours of high meadow and larch forest rounding Croda da Lago to the Forcella Ambrizzola side, with Pelmo and Civetta filling the horizon on the way (this is also how our own trek came through). From the Cortina side, a steady forest climb of around 600 m reaches the lake in about 2 hours. Either way it is honest moderate hiking: no exposure, real climbing.

Alta Via 1 passes at Forcella Ambrizzola just above the lake, so Federa slots naturally into a multi-day route.

  • From Passo Giau: 2-2.5 h, the scenic line
  • From the Cortina side: ~600 m of forest climbing, ~2 h
  • No road, no lift: everyone at the lake walked there

The larch window and the hut

The photograph that fills feeds every autumn, gold larches doubled in still water under Becco di Mezzodì, happens in a roughly two-week window in late October, right at the end of the hut season. Rifugio Croda da Lago (Palmieri) sits on the shore: sleep there, and both the evening glass and the dawn mirror are yours before any day hiker arrives. Book that window early; it is the hut's busiest fortnight.

FAQ

How do you get to Lago Federa?

On foot only: 2 to 2.5 scenic hours from Passo Giau around Croda da Lago, or about 2 hours and 600 m of climbing from the Cortina side. There is no road or lift access, which is why it stays quiet.

When do the larches turn at Lago Federa?

Usually a roughly two-week window in late October, at the end of the hut season. Overnighting at Rifugio Croda da Lago on the shore gives you the sunrise mirror before day hikers arrive; that fortnight books out early.

Can you stay overnight at Lago Federa?

Yes: Rifugio Croda da Lago (Palmieri) stands directly on the lakeshore. It also links to Alta Via 1 at Forcella Ambrizzola just above, so the lake works as a night on a longer hut-to-hut route in our planner.
