Five days is the sweet spot for a first hut-to-hut trip — long enough to feel the rhythm of rifugio life, short enough to fit into a week off work. This itinerary follows the middle section of Alta Via 1 from Passo Falzarego to Rifugio Coldai under the Civetta wall.

The day-by-day

All days are walkable in 5–7 hours. Distances and ascents are reliable; tweak rest stops to your pace.

  • Day 1: Passo Falzarego → Rifugio Lagazuoi (cable car or 3 h walk, 700 m up)
  • Day 2: Lagazuoi → Rifugio Nuvolau via the Cinque Torri (9 km, 600 m up, 800 m down)
  • Day 3: Nuvolau → Rifugio Città di Fiume around Croda da Lago (13 km, 500 m up, 950 m down)
  • Day 4: Città di Fiume → Rifugio Coldai under Pelmo (13 km, 1,050 m up, 700 m down)
  • Day 5: Coldai → Rifugio Vazzoler traversing the Civetta wall (13 km, 350 m up, 950 m down) — bus from Listolade back to Cortina or Belluno

What you'll see

This is the cinematic core of Alta Via 1. The Lagazuoi terrace, the Cinque Torri at golden hour, the Croda da Lago amphitheatre, the Pelmo's massive north face, and finally the 1,200 m Civetta wall above Coldai — five of the most famous Dolomites silhouettes.

FAQ

Is 5 days enough for a Dolomites hut-to-hut trek?

Yes — it covers the iconic middle of Alta Via 1 from Lagazuoi to the Civetta. You'll sleep in 4 rifugi and walk 6–7 hours a day.

How hard is a 5-day Dolomites trek?

Moderate. Daily ascents of 500–1,050 m, well-marked trails, no via ferrata required. Anyone fit for a long week of UK or US hill walking can do it.

Can I do this 5-day trek in reverse?

Yes — Coldai to Lagazuoi works just as well, and finishes with the Lagazuoi cable car so you can get out fast on day 5.
